vo.go - Vocabulary to go

Project Info:

Challenge
Not everybody learns the same way. However, most digital language learning tools are based on repeating vocabulary. Vo.go seeks to offer a venue for practicing problematic vocabulary in a refreshing and creative way.

Outcome
Vo.go is a mobile application that stimulates the user to create his own dictionary using mnemonics linked to his own environment. Given that mnemonics provide a multisensorial link with words, these are more suitable to be remembered by intuitive learners.

How it works
By Linking difficult words with the environment (location, object, situation), the application allows the user to connect them with own created mnemonics. These consist in self taken pictures and written sentences. The user can thus provide a proper translation and memory aid for himself. This emotional association with words and pictures eases to practice difficult vocabulary on an emotional level. The application involves three stages:

Selecting - While using his language learning software, the user can select words to synchronise them with vo.go and practice them later.

Creating - When going out of his home, he receives a remind with the vocabulary he chose earlier. This helps him to keep the words in mind and to be aware of possible links in his environment. Later, he can find a place that matches a word in his list, so he link them by making a sentence and taking a picture of the environment.

Repeating - Afterwards, the user can recall the link in three ways: By selecting the word in the language learning software, by getting a notification when walking by the place again, or checking the list in the mobile application.
