Create product attachment to reduce electronic waste.
Outcome
Zodiac is an interactive alarm clock that aims at creating a durable bond with its user through physical traces of use that engrave meaning into the product, making it unique. Such bond prevents the product to be easily thrown away, but kept and repaired.
How it works
When the alarm goes on, a bright light shines at a random spot through the translucent sphere. The alarm can be switched off by turning the sphere to match the light spot with a mark in the frame. While doing this, the frame scratches the sphere’s surface, removing its paint and creating new traces. The more the alarm clock is used, the more patterns are visible and more light will shine through the traces. Slowly, even the inside electronics become visible.
